Mechanical Engineering Designer

Occasional remote work possibility

Mechanical Engineering Designer (Geotechnical Equipment, Finland)

MergeWise is supporting our long-standing partner, a Finnish expert in advanced geotechnical and drilling solutions, in the search for a skilled Mechanical Engineering Designer (Geotechnical Equipment).

Our partner is a trusted developer and producer of robust tools designed for harsh environments, with a strong focus on precision engineering that enhances productivity in mining, construction, and exploration projects worldwide.

This role offers a hybrid work model (remote + onsite), with structured training in Finland (approximately 50% onsite during the first year). We are hiring for two positions and welcome applications with strong mechanical engineering expertise and training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components for geotechnical tools, drilling rigs, probes, and related equipment using CAD software (SolidWorks or Creo).
  • Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies, and technical specifications with GD&T standards.
  • Perform engineering calculations, simulations (FEA for stress/thermal analysis), and first-principles validations to ensure design integrity, safety, and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, manufacturing, testing) to iterate prototypes, conduct trials, and resolve production issues.
  • Support DFM/DFA processes, material selection (e.g., steels, alloys for wear resistance), and documentation including BOMs and ECNs.
  • Participate in design reviews, testing in field conditions, and continuous improvement based on customer feedback.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong mechanical engineering expertise is required. Experience in geotechnical or drilling equipment is not mandatory; candidates with backgrounds in heavy equipment, steel structures, industrial systems, or manufacturing-driven design are highly relevant.
  • Proficiency in up-to-date CAD tools and experience with SolidWorks or Creo is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good command of English, with the ability to communicate effectively in a professional engineering environment
  • Experience in mechanical design for heavy equipment, tools, geotechnical applications, and hands-on prototyping/testing is an advantage
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, welding, etc.) is a plus
  • Willingness to travel to/recide to Finland (~50% onsite during the first year)

We are also open to postgraduate or early-career candidates with a strong academic background in mechanical engineering, including relevant thesis work or hands-on project experience.

Company offers

  • Work as part of a strong, experienced engineering team, contributing to real-world industrial solutions
  • A culture built on precision, professionalism, and innovation, with a dynamic and collaborative environment
  • High level of accountability and independence, with ownership of your work and engineering decisions
  • Competitive remuneration aligned with experience and EU market benchmarks
  • Flexible hybrid work model after the structured onboarding in Finland
  • Exposure to advanced geotechnical drilling technologies
