Job Description
The position holder will be the Lead Legal Counsel for Consumer and Industrial, covering Europe, Middle/East and Africa, directly reporting to the Global General Counsel and dotted line to the European CEO.
Essential Responsibilities
* Provide legal advice and business perspective on all aspects of the business including but not limited to: new products/markets, acquisitions, joint ventures, business development, integrations, operations, employee matters, growth initiatives, corporate governance, litigation and customer disputes
* Assist in driving compliance for C&I (member of the CRB, enforcer of the GE code of ethics, responsible for rolling out Session D and compliance related training in Europe)
* Manage the pole legal organization (6 counsels) with the intent of coaching, developing and promoting legal talent
* Support all business functions (commercial, HR, EHS; sourcing, technology, finance etc.) by providing legal advice on regulatory issues/matters facing the business
* Work as an integral part of the business team in evaluating, planning negotiating and documenting significant corporate and commercial transactions, including joint ventures. Participating with assigned business component staffs in developing key strategies for those businesses; and coordinating the full range of legal support required by assigned business components
* Structure, negotiate and draft complex agreements, such as: acquisition agreements, joint ventures and vendor program agreements
* Manage legal expenses (for both internal and outside counsel) and consistently identify productivity initiatives for the business and function while providing cost effective business oriented legal services
* Lead development and implementation of new processes, or identify and lead corrective action on existing ones, with the goals of resolving unanticipated procedural compliance risks
* Identify and lead projects to simplify legal processes
* Select and manage outside counsel when needed
Requirements
* Education: JD Degree from a European or US University, Admission to the Bar of a European Union member state, Master's degree in law or business would be considered an advantage
* Experience: 12-15 years (in-house or with a law firm of international repute)
