To provide the best medical service possible to passengers and crew, and to assist the Staff Captain in all USPH Related matters.
The Doctor reports to the Staff Captain.
Holds a Basic Safety Course Certificate and appropriate licenses and certificates as required by regulations.
He/she is in charge of the medical division.
He/she shall be familiar with and active in the Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) including his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
The Doctor’s primary responsibility is as the Master’s and the Staff Captain’s adviser on all matters related to hospital services, passenger and crewmember health, and the hygienic condition onboard.
He/she is responsible for the operation, good order and cleanliness of the medical spaces.
Supervising daily medical consultations for passenger and crewmembers and keeping the Master advised of all matters of consequence.
He/she is responsible for the administration of the Medical Center.
He/she is responsible for all medications and drugs onboard, and he shall at all times keep a good control with the inventory in accordance with the Company’s regulations and requirements. At least once a month or when there is a change in medical staff, a drug count shall be held, and the Staff Captain shall be present to verify it.
Ensure confidentiality of medical information.
Provide first aid instruction for crew members as directed by the Staff Captain.
The Doctor shall be a member of both, the Management and Crew Safety and Environmental Committee. This committee will recommend safety practices and corrective measures for the prevention of accidents to passengers and crew.
Supervise the administrative procedures for treatment of illnesses, injuries and deaths in accordance with the applicable regulations.
In all medical related methods, he/she shall stay in close contact with the Corporate Medical Consultant, and consult him/her when necessary.
He/she shall perform Weekly Sanitation inspections together with the ship’s management.
Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SEMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
SHIP’S PHYSICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES: (include but are not limited to)
To be present during all clinic hours.
Provide competent medical care to both passengers and crew.
Oversee inventory of medical supplies and monitor hospital budget.
Participate in inspections of the galley and food handling areas.
Maintain a confidential relationship between doctor and patient. However, if the physician expects a serious contagious illness which could affect the well being of others, he/she will report directly to the Staff Captain and Fleet Physician.
Maintain a professional working atmosphere. This includes providing adequate privacy while examining patients. In the event a male physician examines a female patient in any state of undress, the ship’s female nurse shall accompany him.
Participate in monthly safety meetings, assisting in making recommendations, which improve overall safety of the ship.
Oversee the administration and safekeeping of all medications and drugs in accordance with regulations.
Serves as advisor to the Master and Staff Captain on all matters related to Medical Center services, passenger and crewmember health matters and hygienic conditions onboard the vessel.
Physicians shall not participate in any shipboard activity intended for passengers.
Shall provide technical assistance in regards to sanitation and compliance with USPH and CDC regulations.
Assist the Safety Manager, in the orientation of new crew as to safety and personal hygiene.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Medical Degree from a recognized College or University.
Active, current medical license in good standing in Country or State/Province of origin.
A minimum of 5 years clinical experience after completion of recognized post M.D. training program.
Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support within one year of application. Renewal of ACLS every two years.
Practical experience in ACLS.
Formal training and experience in at least one of the following: Emergency Medicine, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, or General Surgery.
Ability to diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions.
Ability to perform minor surgery such as suturing, removal of benign skin lesions, removal of foreign objects, removal of ingrown toenails, identification of and immobilizing of simple fractures.
Fluent in the English language.
Be able to pass a comprehensive pre-employment physical examination and drug test.
Supply three letters of recommendation from medical institutions or medical specialist or a combination of both.
Supply a chronology of all medical activities since graduating from Medical College.
Supply documentation of all of the above.
