The faculty also offers programmes within multicultural understanding, interpretation and development studies.

Research Fellowship in international studies

The Faculty of Education and International Studies, Department of International Studies and Interpreting.

Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA) is Norway’s largest state university college, with approximately 17,000 students and 2000 employees. The Faculty of Education and International Studies offers teacher education in kindergartens, primary schools, lower and upper secondary schools as well as vocational teacher education. The faculty also offers programmes within multicultural understanding, interpretation and development studies. The faculty has master programmes in early childhood education and care, multicultural and international education, ICT supported learning, school pedagogy, school-based educational science and vocational pedagogy. The faculty has a PhD programme in educational sciences for teacher education. It has an extensive number of extension studies and continuing education studies.

The Department of international studies and interpreting is advertising a PhD fellowship within the PhD programme of educational sciences for teacher education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies. The Department has a strong group of researchers within this research field.

The strategic objective of the faculty is to be at the forefront of educational sciences for teacher education. As part of this objective, the department aims to become a leading academic environment within the study of diversity, communication, development and education in an international perspective.

Tasks and responsibilities

The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the research group “Development, power and inequality”. This group investigates development-related questions regarding power and inequality in poor countries (“the Global South”) and power relations between poor and rich countries (“North – South relations”). The topic of the PhD project should focus on questions at the intersection between development and education in the Global South. Projects that investigate power relations and inequality will be preferred.

The PhD scholarship period is three years. It can be extended to four years in combination with 25 percent additional work related duties (generally teaching duties), normally in the form of teaching. The PhD candidate will be expected to begin by September, 2016. The Ph.D. candidate will have their office at the Department of international studies and interpreting.

Qualifications
•Completed five year MA education or equivalent degree within international education studies, development studies, or other relevant social Sciences
•Ability to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing
•Relevant work experience - for instance within research, development co-operation, or teaching - is an advantage

Conditions
•Applicants for the fellowship must also apply for admission at the PhD programme of educational sciences for teacher education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies. It is required that the candidate is admitted to this PhD programme in order to be employed. Applicants who are interviewed for the position will receive information about the procedures of application and deadline for the PhD programme.
•A final plan for the PhD education programme should be approved and agreed no later than three months after employment.

Assessment of application

The candidates will be assessed by an expert evaluation committee. The following documents must be uploaded within the deadline of application
•Application, curriculum vitae and verified copies of diplomas, certificates/transcripts of records. The certificate/transcript of records must comply with the ECTS scale (A-F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-issuing institution. Foreign education should be approved in advance by Norwegian authorities. A verified letter of approval should be enclosed.
•MA thesis and other scientific work to be assessed by the expert committee along with a list of your publications
•Project proposal (no more than ten pages, including list of references)


Please note that your experience and education, as stated in your curriculum vitae should be confirmed by certificates, diplomas, or other documents. The expert committee cannot use unverified activities stated in your curriculum vitae to assess your qualifications.

The project proposal must include a description of the research area, research questions, methodology, a time line for the project and a list of references. The originality of the project proposal, its qualities, potentials and relevance to the research area are of particular importance in the assessment of the applicant. The applicant’s university grades and former scientific work (including the master thesis) are also significant. When the expert committee has finished its assessment, the most qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.

The position is remunerated in code 1017, salary scale 50-54, gross NOK 430 500 – 459 700 before tax.
